Mrs. McGilvary's News

Dear Eighth Grade Families,                                                                    June 10, 2010

We met Monday, June 7th to discuss plans for next year’s eighth grade class.  The following is a recap from that meeting.  I want everyone to have the same information to prepare for next year.

Safety Patrol: Safety Patrol is offered to eighth grade students, but is not required of them.  Safety Patrol is a vital part of our school, and your children have already been trained and have been doing a great job so far.  In the Middle of May next year, Safety Patrollers have an overnight trip to the Wisconsin Dells as a reward for all of their hard work.

Memoirs: The eighth graders work on memoirs throughout the school year.  A list of dates and topics was handed out and can be found on the eighth grade page of the St. Charles Website.  Students are asked to bring a scrapbook or three-ring binder to school in September.  They are encouraged to begin looking through family photos in the summer and bring them to school.  These photos may be used for both the memoirs and the class video.  Students do not need scrapbooking supplies, except for the book itself; everything else is provided.

Class video:  Throughout the year, students bring in and scan pictures during their computer lab time for the class video.  All pictures are due by March first.  Mrs. Halverson will be working on the video with other parents.  The video will be played before the graduation ceremony and a copy will be given to each graduate.

Graduation clothing: I discussed the possibility of graduation gowns, but the consensus seemed to be against gowns.  Girls are discouraged from buying graduation dresses in the Prom section of stores.  The dress code for graduation is dresses or skirts for the girls, with no shoulders or backs showing.  Boys should wear dress pants and a shirt and tie.  Clothing should be modest and chaste befitting our Catholic identity.

Graduation set up:  We will have chairs set up in the gym for graduation.  There will be a limited number of tables for people to sit at to eat cake after the ceremony.  The class chose dark blue, black, and silver for their class colors, a tradition dating back to the first graduating class one hundred years ago.

Ribbon Pinning and photos:  We discussed having graduation photos after the Ribbon Pinning ceremony.  However, parents who could not make ribbon pinning preferred to keep photos at graduation.  Ribbon pinning will be the first Monday in May next year.  The bulletin picture will be taken after the ceremony.

Fundraising: We discussed fundraising options.  Mr. Kawalec is heading the pancake breakfast committee with a number of other parents helping (the Neilson’s, Winker’s, Yonah’s) and several others on the organizing committee.  All eighth graders are required to attend the pancake breakfast on the last Sunday of January (the 30th I think) and parents should be available that day as well.

Raffle:  The traditional raffle during spirit week will be spearheaded by Mrs. Lois, Mrs. Monahan, and Mrs. Hockman.  The students are encouraged to give these parents suggestions for raffle items.  A note and email will be sent home in October discussing the raffle.

Hotdogs: The eighth graders will sell a hotdog lunch on the bag lunch days.  Several parents volunteered to help Mrs. McGilvary organize this with the eighth grade class.  More information will be available in the fall.

Class trip:  A decision regarding the class trip is on hold until after the pancake breakfast and bag lunch days to determine if funds will be available.

On another note, I wanted to let you know early enough that dress code for the Washington, D.C. trip is collared shirts with jeans not being allowed.

We are looking forward to a fantastic school year with the eighth grade.
