Language Arts: The first graders have written two writing pieces. One was an expository piece each students drew upon knowledge about an animal that was highlighted on our Retzer Nature Fieldtrip. In this piece, each student had to write about the food and shelter important to their animal. The other writing piece was a story in which the student created an imaginary animal that may have taken on human characteristics. The goal was to write a main idea with three supporting details and finally have the ending tie into the main idea. Special Guest We were fortunate to have grandparents of one of our students bring in chicks for the students to see and experience firsthand. It was a good way to incorporate our learning of adjectives as the students got to feel, see, and hear the chicks!
Reading: We are in our final reading book, Hometowns. The students are reading stories about various locations and situations that revolve around things that could happen in our community. The students have also become excellent “detectives” in spotting and writing down words with learned phonetic sounds and letter patterns.
Math: We’ve completed our unit on Measurement and had some fun estimating with paperclips and exploring cup, pint and quart containers to see how much they held in comparison to each other, and then to see how a balance scale shows what is heavier and lighter than a pound and kilogram. Using the centimeter and inch rulers helped us find out how long certain objects were. Our last focus for the school year is on geometric shapes: classifying, sorting, comparing and cutting shapes into equal parts. We will finish the chapter with the fractions:1/2, 1/3, and 1/4.
Religion: We are finding out about how God will always forgive us. The first graders made up their own prayers of thanks and forgiveness, typing them up in the computer lab. The first graders had their own May crowning to honor Mary.
Social Studies: We are finishing the school year with learning about Economics. We have discussed the difference between “wants” and “needs” and the importance of work and jobs. Goods and services are two important terms we have learned about. The first graders will brush up on how we can use the trade of money or objects to get goods and services. Science: We just worked through learning about our Earth and the way it changes over time. Did you know that millions of years ago the Grand Canyon was a plain? The weather elements of heavy rain, flooding and drought have to do with some of the ways the earth’s surface has changed. The first graders learned that streams and rivers help to carry rocks and soil to different locations which also changes the landscape. It was fun watching a few demonstrations in the Science Lab, Computer Lab and in our classroom using models to demonstrate different landforms and help the students formulate answers to how heavy rains can change our landscape through erosion and flooding.
Fieldtrips: At the end of April, we explored all different types of animal and plant habitats as we hiked through the Retzer Nature Center in Waukesha. Our guide, Hiker Bob, offered interesting facts along the way such as showing us a huge Oak tree that was alive when George Washington was our President. He also showed us “skunk cabbages” that attract flies to pollinate the plants so bigger patches sprout up. This all tied into previous learning in Science of plants and animals. That trip ended with a planetarium show to help us understand a little bit more about the universe around us.
On May 21st, the class enjoyed their last fieldtrip as first graders. Each chaperoned group went through the zoo to see if they could fill in their Zoo Bingo sheets and had a great time seeking the animals out.
We had a wonderful year of learning, sharing, playing and caring! Have a spectacular, safe and blessed summer vacation. See you in the Fall!
