Welcome back to another wonderful year at St. Charles School.  I am so excited about everything we have planned for the year.   There will be many fun activities, field trips, and science experiments that we will be doing.  I will be adding pictures of these things from time to time.

Be sure to check out the links page as there are many fun websites to help you practice the areas you have trouble in, review topics, or just play a game.  Some of the sites are directly linked to our textbooks.  What better way could there be to help review for tests?

Don’t forget to check out The Einstein Club.  Joining this Club is optional and not required.

This year the students will also be starting their transition from the elementary school level to intermediate and our focus will be on learning how to use the assignment notebook, as well as good homework and study habits.

Book orders will come home from time to time and your participation is purely optional.  If you choose to participate, please only send in a check payable to Scholastic News.  For those of you who prefer to order online and pay by credit card, that option will also be available.  Details on this will be sent home with the first book offers.

Currently in math we are working on place value, rounding, comparing numbers, and story problem strategies.  There are some great practice links on the links page if you are interested.  One of the links is a cumbersome list, if you have any questions about how to locate practice lessons on the site feel free to stop in as I would be more than happy to show you.

Each week in reading we will be reading a new story and learning a focused comprehension strategy while we review a previously learned one.  There will also be a weekly spelling test that ties directly into our phonics lessons.  Our spelling word lists can also be found here.  From time to time, I may change a few of the words if I notice several students miss-spelling a commonly used word.

In language arts we are working on sentences from structure to the correct use of punctuation.  Our writing focus for the Unit will be on personal narratives.  I am excited to say that we will have pen-pals this year from Mrs. Martin’s class in Pompano Beach Florida.

Currently in religion we are working on unity and learning about the early Church.  We will be spending some time in this unit learning about St. Paul, Peter, St. Martin,  the Sacraments of initiation, and how we can live and grown in the Kingdom of God.

What is weather?  That is the question in science.  While we are learning about what causes weather, the water cycle, and be able to identify cloud types.

In our social studies we will be reviewing map skills.  Our textbook focus is on communities.  What are the three types of communities?  How do people celebrate in their communities?  Those are just a few of the questions we will tackle in our first chapter.

Please feel free to contact me with any concerns throughout this school year.  By working together, we can help your son/daughter be successful in third grade and beyond.
