Ms. Benz's Second Grade

Welcome to Second Grade

The second grade class is off and running!  This is a very special year for the students.  They will be receiving the sacraments of Reconciliation in February and Holy Communion in May.  We are also looking forward to learning how to read and write cursive after Christmas.   They will be feeling really grown-up and proud of their achievements.

We are looking forward to a successful year by believing in God, loving others, working hard, behaving well, and doing our best.  We are keeping track of our successes on the bulletin board by the office.  Be sure to stop and read the board when you are visiting school.  You’ll be amazed!

Reading is so important in today’s world and the second graders are on their way to becoming wonderful readers.  Daily reading is a must in second grade.  The students will benefit in so many ways from additional practice at home.  Our first collection of stories focuses on how readers learn about characters by what they do and say.  We will learn about point of view, making predictions, summarizing main ideas, and how to compare and contrast.

The goal of our first Math chapter is to review basic facts from Kindergarten and 1st grade as well as learn the “big” facts with sums and differences to 20.  Flash cards will be sent home for daily practice as we learn each set of new facts.  Be sure to help your child memorize them.  Math is easy and fun when students know the facts from memory.

We have begun our Science class with lessons on the Food Pyramid.  Proper nutrition and exercise are vital for developing minds and growing bodies.  Please take time to talk about balanced diets and the importance of movement.  Be sure your child eats a good breakfast before school.

“Communities” is the topic of our first Social Studies unit.  We will learn about our community and other types around us.  The students will learn the difference between urban, suburban, and rural areas.

As you can see, we will be very busy learning many new and interesting things.

If you have concerns, questions, etc; my e-mail is mbenz@mystcharles.org.  I also be reached before and after school.

Have a joyful and prosperous autumn.  Gods blessings to you and your family!
